New Member Book: The Miracle of St. Genevieve: Vatican II and the Victory of Fai Friday, May 14, 2010 (18:12:56)
|
|
Here's the news straight from Woody:
The Miracle of St. Genevieve has emerged into print. Like One Dream: The NFL and Cajun Mariners, The Miracle is a true story. But this time the subject is not football or oil but faith.
Some people have asked me, “You went from writing about those crazy oilfield boat guys to religion? What’s gotten into you?” Others have wondered aloud, “What exactly is the ‘miracle?’”
Only the book answers those questions. You can pick up a copy (hardcover, $27.95) at tomorrow’s release party (Sat., 5/15/10) at 5 pm at the St. Genevieve Family Center, 815 Barbier Avenue, Thibodaux. If you can’t make the party, please consider purchasing the book from your local independent merchant (a list of participating bayou independents is below). You can also order online at http://www.woodyfalgoux.com/. The book is listed on Amazon, but the web giant has not yet received its stock-up shipment.
For the record, I am donating 100% of my profits from this book to St. Genevieve to support its church and school and to feed its local and international ministries. The parish not only contributes to the region’s poor but also funds a twice-annual mission to Mexico and gives to relief organizations that provide necessities to the impoverished across the world. By buying this book, your dollars will simultaneously touch the needy on several different continents. Also, the people in this book will hopefully engage and inspire you as they did me.
Thanks and Godspeed,
Woody |

CWG Member Wins Tom Howard Award Friday, October 10, 2008 (11:59:53)
|
|
CWG Member Arthur Powers' short story "The Bridge," won 2nd place in the Tom Howard Short Story Award Contest. "The Bridge," which originally appeared in St. Anthony Messenger and won another award from the Catholic Press Association, is about a priest working in the interior of Brazil. It is always encouraging to see an expressly Catholic story recognized in a secular forum! Another of Arthur's stories (a secular one), "Gilsa," won an honorable mention. |

I would like to announce that Gentle Journey is currently being featured on a blog tour on Christian Fiction Review for the month of June. The first link to the tour is http:cfrblog.blogspot.com; that connects to http://forstrose.blogspot.com/ which has an interview and review. The next link is http://cathischatter.blogspot.com/. Then http://www.authorlauradavis.com.
The Regency novel is meant to appeal to people of all ages. The main character, Eden, is the daughter of a Church of England Vicar who encounters an agnostic employer as well as all sorts of circumstances that call for her faith to be employed. I am a cradle Catholic who has taught many years in Catholic schools, so the opinions expressed by Eden are from a Catholic point of view, though points where Protestants and Catholics might differ are not brought up. I wrote the book to offer an alternative to the lack of morality found in the romances so many of my students were reading. |

opinion - The Passion of Christopher Monday, September 10, 2007 (16:57:55)

The Passion of Christopher
by Lisa Milandich
Is it possible that Jesus Christ would approve of Christopher Hitchens’ new article in Newsweek (entitled, “The Dogmatic Doubter,” September 10, 2007)? Our Lord did say, after all, that He despised the lukewarm, “neither hot nor cold,” and Hitchens certainly does not give the appearance of being lukewarm. But what is he in such a red-hot passion about? Poverty? Indifference? Materialism? Why no! The plump provocateur is mad as hell at the cause for sainthood of a little Albanian nun who rose before dawn for over fifty years to pick up and tenderly care for human beings nobody else had the guts to touch. In Hitchens’ scathing indictment of Mother Teresa and what he claims to be a self-serving, hysterical obsession with working off her psychological pathologies he actually calls her “… a confused old lady [who had] for all practical purposes ceased to believe...” |

30K for Christ Prayer
In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
God in Heaven, You granted us, in Your Image, the ability to imagine and create. This month, I endeavor to indulge that creativity. Look with favor upon my efforts.
Dear Holy Spirit, this day, this month, I commend my writing efforts to your care. I ask for your guidance and your prayers as I seek to complete the project(s) in my mind and my heart.
O my Jesus, son of God, Light of the world, help me to spread your Light in all that I do. May my words be pleasing to You. Be close to me in this month as I strive to write 30,000 words for you.
Dear St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus. You knew hard work all your life. Inspire me to keep working toward my goal even when the words won't come with ease. You faced uncertainty. Teach me, then to place my trust in God as I forge into the uncertainty of my writing adventure.
Dear Mary, our Spiritual Mother, you were uncertain when the Archangel approached you, yet you gave yourself to God's Will. Give me grace to recognize and embrace my calling.
I place myself and my muse in your care, full of trust and gratitude. Amen.
May the Holy Spirit fill me and guide my imagination, I ask through Christ our Lord. Amen

CWG Prayer
Holy Family,
Guide our minds, our hearts, our hands,
as we write, speak, illustrate –
help our words to live in union with the Word.
Teach us discipline and skill
to use the talents God gives us.
Give us also insight and courage
to convey God's love through our craft,
and humility to be open
to His divine will, shaping our lives,
in loving loyalty to His Church.
In Christ's name,
Amen.
